The phrase limited or liberated was made in a friend’s blog in reference to our choices in the way we live* It struck me as the perfect summation of the mindset and actions of people who are waking up in the world today. Whether they are waking up because of the political unrest or are facing personal issues with new awareness, there is a ground swell of people embracing life changing transformation.

Independence Day celebrates a time in our country’s history when our founders made very defining choices about creating a new life based on specific ideals. They fought to be released from a limited lifestyle to carve out one that was more liberated.

In my work, I seek to help people move from being limited in their view of themselves to embracing and liberating the fullness of who they are and can be. What is often not understood is that it is a decision to be in either place. The powerlessness that many people have, often bracketed by social norms, is an illusion. We have a choice.

Consider where you live, what you do, your loved ones, family, friends, recreation. We may limit our choices in one area and not others. They each have their pluses and minuses. While on the surface it may seem obvious which choice you would make, to be liberated of course, there are many who knowingly choose the self-limiting option. See where you stand for yourself.

we can be unconscious when we make choices and live with them – for a very long time. Maybe the choices were good and still are. But maybe we have not looked at them and considered our options.

Pluses:  Many people choose to live a contained and consistent life. This means the details are predictable in place to live, work, friends, partner, and activities. It is a life without much risk for the number of choices are reduced. This helps people feel secure, comfortable, stable and safe.

Minuses: The limitations can make life monotonous, and boring over time. The safety and security can create a fear of change and fear of others that reduces your desire to seek something new. The limitations can become like a cage that closes the world off, stifling one’s ability to grow and change.

Being conscious of life choices and approaching each with flexibility to consider our options means breaking out of a fixed idea of who we are, given to us by life circumstances. It means taking risks.

Pluses: Challenging  social norms, family expectations, and your own resistance to embrace a life that is uniquely your own is exhilarating. When choices are based on values, personal preference, assets and your greater good the results are rewarding. People report feeling more alive, creative, and in charge.

Minuses: Stepping out of the line of expectations has Its costs. There can be alienation, judgment and the struggle with family and friends. It can create a feeling of being disconnected, alone and suffering, if you are not able to create a new base of support that replaces the old way of life.

Every day we have choices. When we pay attention, we can consider if they are limiting our life or allowing us to stretch ourselves to embrace growth and some new form of liberation. I love being in a role to support expansion, helping people break out of the shackles of belief and assumption that you can’t or shouldn’t change. When people take the suffering and lessons of their past and use it as motivation to stretch toward new growth and liberation, it is always cause for celebration.
