How To Make This A Time For Transformation

As the world around us undergoes transformation, it invites us to consider our own change process. Change can be a catalyst for great internal and external exploration, creating a leap forward. That’s how it’s worked for me both personally and professionally. Are you up for letting this new reality be an impetus for you to find the opportunity in difficulty?

Thanks to Covid-19, we’re in the midst of a worldwide adjustment that has been needed on many levels. The environment is taking a breather, new leaders are coming forward, and we’re exploring what it’s like to stay home and live at a more leisurely pace. In essence, we have a gift of time and space to consider our life from a different perspective. So how can we make this a time for transformation and make the most of it?

Here are some things to consider:

Fear, the Great Motivator and Transformer

Let me start with fear, given it’s getting easily triggered as we’re bombarded with a data on life and death. It’s a normal, healthy bio-neurological reaction from our nervous system to “do something” in response. It’s part of our fight, flight or freeze response. If you tune in and listen to your fear, what is it telling you? Make friends with it and understand what you need.

If you need reassurance, consider listening to KY Governor Andy Beshear at 5pm every day as he gives wonderful and practical information on how to stay safe. (*See link) If you follow his advice, you’ll be “doing” exactly the right things and you’ll be part of a statewide (and beyond) movement of people staying #healthyathome. Reassure yourself and your fear that you’re doing what’s needed.

If fear is paralyzing you in an unhealthy way, consider this a good time to learn skills to manage it so it doesn’t manage you. Meditation, yoga, and mindfulness offer wonderful techniques that will help you reduce fear. Check out the excellent online resources that will help you learn these things. (*See links) If you feel like you need something more personally tailored, counseling is a great option, being offered on-line by me and most clinicians, just reach out.

Sometimes fear is a signal to make needed changes. If this change in lifestyle  is igniting the need for changes personally or professionally, tune into those feelings and let the fear inform you. It can be a wonderful and important call to action – don’t ignore the message.

If  fear is communicating with you right now – listen and follow up on this important call to action to do something about it.

Find New Perspectives, Look for Inspiration

Interestingly, I am hearing many positive comments about the lifestyle change we are experiencing. Whether you like it or you’re uncomfortable, we’re being shown the contrast of a new perspective. This is the Law of Polarity in action. Everything has it’s opposite – do you like this better or not? Let the contrast of your experience give you perspectives, as a catalyst for your future transformation.

For inspiration, also notice the perspective Spring provides, bursting forth as  always, despite these challenging times. The flowers continue to bud, the birds are building their nests. Let it be a metaphor for how you can handle this situation. No matter what, we have our life to live each day. Make it beautiful and purposeful like Spring, despite the circumstances.

Find new perspectives in the contrasts we’re being shown to inform the choices you have now and in the future.

Examine Your Priorities

There is a gift in the time and space that opens us to recognize our true priorities. I’m so grateful to have this time at home, to be with loved ones and to do things that I usually don’t have time to do. I’m hearing that from most everyone I talk to. What does this tell you?

As I’ve written over the last several weeks, we have an opportunity to put things into a more meaningful order. What wants more time, what needs less? Clarify what you are learning. I know that this peaceful pace is not something I want to give back. It’s calling me to make adjustments.

What are you learning in the space we have – what are your priorities now?

Enhance Your Purpose and Contribution

This crisis is an opportunity to come together for the greater good of all. It’s been inspiring and long overdue. There’s a burst of creativity and generosity coming in from all directions – artistic projects, families doing things together, offers of kindness, and businesses responding to the call for needed supplies. We are softening to the needs of the world and the greater good of all.

How does this make you want to rise to this occasion? My friends are planting gardens, reorganizing their work, watching out for each other and using their creative talents. Despite the forced distance, there are real connections being made through social media and the internet. We are more meaningfully connected than ever for we have clear intention and heartfelt purpose. The meaning in what we do has never been clearer.

We have Covid-19 to thank for bringing us to our knees to see the truth of what’s important and how we can contribute.

Despite the difficulty of this time, we now have the impetus to consider the transformation that we’ve longed to make. Fear can be a great motivator. Is it telling you to do something different or to learn to manage it differently. The forced distancing is helping us discover new perspectives and  new inspiration. Priorities are getting clarified and simplified. The needs of the world and the greater good of all are finally taking the stage – notice how that helps you understand your purpose and contribution. There is opportunity for transformation in front of us everywhere.
