sun-risingThere was a moment, over a decade ago, when everything became clear to me – my awareness of life changed in an instant. I was outside in my garden and noticed it seemed like I was enveloped in an energetic mist – everything seemed to be glowing with an iridescence. I stopped, transfixed and slowly looked around.  I became aware that everything, all beings and everything in nature, are interconnected. I realized we are accountable to each other, whether we are aware of it or not. I realized that living authentically was essential. And most of all, I knew that I needed to bring my life into alignment with this awareness. It was a quiet moment that launched major changes.

I am reminded of this moment because I have a number of new clients reporting similar kinds of awakenings. Some are sudden, like mine, and others are like a slow dawning. But each person has reported that once they became aware, there is no going back, they needed to radically alter their life. Yes, I remember that sense of urgency.

Interestingly though, most of these people are young. Are people waking up sooner?  They don’t have as much baggage to comb though and can shift more easily. it’s an exciting promise for our future.

So, what happens when you’re AWAKENED? I dove into books by Eckhart Tolle, the Tao Te Ching, Ram Dass, Bryon Katie and many others to guide my awakening process. What can you expect? Now, many years later, here is my take on the change process:

One of the first thoughts I had was I wanted my inner life and outer life to be the same. That may seem obvious, but at the time, it was like being hit with a lightning bolt.

My soul essentially said; “Wake up, get honest with yourself”. Get your actions in alignment with what you are really thinking and feeling. Don’t do one thing and silently think, oh brother, I really don’t like this or want it. Instead, get congruent.

I’m seeing this with my clients too. Some got knocked around a bit to realize it, for others, it came more easily. Either way, they are ready to bring their soul’s yearning into reality. Once the change process starts, it’s exhilarating.

Congruence is a simple concept that can turn your life upside down.

Being congruent from the inside out requires that your values be aligned. You’re doing things you believe in – your actions are a reflection of what you believe.

Here is a simple test: Think of 5 values that you hold dear. (for example: being kind, loving, service oriented, generous, and healthy). Think about your daily activities over a typical week. Do your actions line up with your values? If not what needs to change?

What you believe actually matches what you do.

It becomes important to slow down, be still and simply notice. Your awareness is heightened and you are frequently in a state of awe. The simple things in nature take your breath. The intricate loveliness of a flower, the feather on your path, the flight of birds, the rustling of trees, the sunset, moon rise…it all reminds you of the value of life and your connection to something greater.

Your interactions with people take on a similar reverence. You notice the kind gesture, the sweet smile, the abandon of laughter, the unique personalities and intelligence of people you love. It all comes flooding in, deepening your capacity to experience and express love. And maybe most important, you love yourself more too.

In stillness, a state of awe extends to everything and everyone around you.

With this new awareness, superficial interactions don’t line up with who you are. I have no tolerance for mindless TV, gossip, and power inequities. And at the same time, it requires a new tolerance for individual choices. We are all different – we have to make room for everyone to be who they are. This requires shifting through your choices. Everything from where and how you live, to your friends and activities.

It becomes clear that for life to be lived authentically, more is required of you. Living with your truth may mean difficult choices so you remain congruent from the inside out. No more acting like everything is fine when it is not. In the end, it is what sets you free to live with more joy and love.

Being authentic is its own reward.

The change process of awakening is only the beginning of the journey. Each step becomes more precious and poignant with meaning.   When you’re in alignment, there are no wrong choices, simply different ways to evolve. This knowledge fills me with deep comforting peace. Most of all, I realize, the more people who step into this process, the more hope we have for our future. Will you join too?
