We needed a change, a different vibe. We have been on a relentless schedule organizing five big events over the last several months and had hit a wall. We usually take a vacation in the summer, but this year we were too busy to leave town. Never again, I said.

Its one thing to work hard, it’s another to keep at it over and over again. I love to push into complex agendas and see them come together. But this time, we had one after another coming at us week after week. I was beyond ready for a getaway.

This last-minute trip took us to the San Francisco Bay area where we visited friends and immersed ourselves in something totally different. Here’s what I realized.

We have a wonderful life, but even the greatest and best times can become stagnant after a while. I was working 7 days a week, spending most of my days and nights at the computer and at the office. Our cats were demanding lots of time, the little one having turned into a chipmunk mass murderer. Finding dead bodies or chewed heads and entrails left as gifts on the bedroom floor was taking a toll. Even our usual fun required more energy than I seemed to have.

I knew we needed  to change things up. Something that would immerse us in a different culture. We wanted to see new sites, get in nature and have new experiences. The West Coast called out.

Pay attention and know when your usual life patterns becomes a rut.

The light and air are different in the Bay area. It seems fresher, lighter, more silver and less gold. The smell of saltwater hits you, yet there’s no humidity, the sun’s hot, sky bright blue and the air cool. The landscape and vegetation are completely different. Ahh yes, this is exactly what we wanted.

People are relaxed, easy with each other, polite and kind. Even the hotel staff and  salesclerks were in good moods. Is it the perfect weather and the gorgeous terrain that makes people happy or what? Looking over water everywhere you turn is restful and relaxing. Gorgeous sunrises and sunsets are soul satisfying. People are packed into little houses on every available space and the traffic is relentless. Yet, peace abides.

The relaxed vibe is everywhere in the beauty of nature, great weather and happy people.

Everything seems bigger. The seagulls are like huge predators, the redwoods towering, Golden Gate Park goes on forever, holding a huge and free music festival with room to spare. Even the night sky seems bigger.

We spent time with our friends on their houseboat in the bay with commanding views of San Francisco and the Golden Gate Bridge. It’s like a tiny house on the water. They showed us how simple it can be to live without a lot of stuff.

Hiking in the Redwood Forest in the Oakland area is stunning.  There is a quiet reverence in the forest, with only the sounds of birds and the rustle of wind. The people we see are often with their dogs, who are uniformly thrilled to be on the trail. We are too.  Feeling small and humbled by the grace of the woods fills me with gratitude for nature’s bounty.

Being in this area of the US, where there is sensitivity to the needs of people, animals and nature, is  a reminder of what’s important.

After five days of fabulous fresh food, great company, wonderful and exciting musical experiences and the serenity and quiet of nature, we are returning home. Our desire for a little getaway is met.

We are coming back a little tired, but refreshed and excited from our experience. Being with good friends, sharing fun times, seeing how others live and opening ourselves to new awareness is restoring.

I’m returning home happy and ready to reinvest in my life.

Do you feel like your life has become a treadmill? Maybe giving yourself exposure to a different vibe can be your antidote, as it was mine. I found that changing up our routine by taking in new perspectives stimulated new awareness. I am refreshed and ready to look at things with new eyes.
